Diver Magnet - 400
The Diver Magnet – 400 is a heavy-duty twin subsea magnet built for major offshore work. It combines two 78 mm neodymium pot magnets (the Diver Magnet – 200 core, N45 grade) under one handle, giving a 400 kg rated pull force and high sliding resistance for pipeline, riser and structural work in strong currents. Each magnet is sealed in epoxy and HDPE for continuous saltwater use. The assembly has a 316 stainless steel M10 eye nut for tools and lanyards and a stainless steel handle for firm positioning and controlled leverage when detaching the magnets at full holding force. A positioning and holding tool for professional divers — not lifting equipment.
Pull Force: 400 kg · Magnetic face Ø: 2 × 78 mm · Grade: N45 · Coating: Epoxy-HDPE · Depth: proven in service to 150 m · Country of origin: South Africa
The Diver Magnet - 400 is an industrial-strength neodymium pot magnet rated at 400 kg pull force — built for the most demanding subsea applications including a secure anchor point for divers, large-diameter pipeline work, and offshore construction tasks. Manufactured by Diving Magnets (Pty) Ltd in South Africa with Epoxy-HDPE coating for corrosion resistance and 316 stainless steel hardware, this diver magnet is trusted by commercial diving professionals worldwide.
What is the Diver Magnet - 400 used for?
- Heavy-duty diver positioning on major subsea construction
- Large-diameter pipeline inspection and repair operations
- Offshore decommissioning and structural cutting support
- Magnetic anchor point and equipment staging on subsea structures
- Hull inspection and cleaning on large commercial vessels
Features & Benefits
- 400 kg rated pull force — maximum holding for the most demanding subsea tasks
- Magnet sealed in epoxy and HDPE for continuous saltwater use
- 316 stainless steel eye nut, handle and screws — engineered for extreme marine environments
- Built for offshore construction, decommissioning, and pipeline work
What surfaces does the Diver Magnet - 400 work on?
Works best on
- Mild steel and carbon steel (best performance — flat, clean surfaces)
- Cast iron structures and components
- Structural steel beams, columns, and plate
- Steel pipelines and risers
- Ship hulls and marine vessel steel
Reduces performance
- Rusted or corroded surfaces — rust and scale create an air gap that reduces pull force
- Painted or coated surfaces — coating thickness creates an air gap
- Curved surfaces — reduced contact area lowers effective pull
- Thin metal (under 5 mm) — insufficient material for full flux path
Will not work on
- Aluminium, brass, copper, and bronze (non-ferrous metals)
- Most austenitic stainless steels (304, 316) — little or no attraction, slightly magnetic only where cold-worked or welded
- Concrete, wood, plastic, fibreglass, and composites
- Titanium and non-magnetic alloys
Safety Guidelines
- Always wear protective gloves when handling magnets rated above 100 kg pull force — pinch injuries are the most common hazard
- Keep magnets away from dive computers, compasses, and electronic instruments — strong magnetic fields can cause permanent damage
- Never allow two magnets to snap together uncontrolled — the collision force can shatter the magnet and cause flying debris
- Use a safety lanyard to secure the magnet to your harness — prevents loss in current or during detachment
- Attach at a 45° angle and rotate flat — never approach a steel surface head-on with a strong magnet
- Brief your dive team on magnet location — unexpected strong pull near steel structures can trap equipment or limbs
Care & Maintenance
- Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after every saltwater use — salt crystals accelerate corrosion if left on the coating
- Dry completely before storage — moisture trapped against the magnet surface causes coating breakdown over time
- Inspect the Epoxy-HDPE coating regularly — any chips or cracks expose the neodymium core to corrosion
- Remove iron filings and metal particles after each use with a wire brush or cloth — accumulated debris reduces pull force
- Store in a cool, dry environment away from electronic equipment — temperatures above 80°C permanently reduce magnetic strength
- Apply a thin layer of corrosion inhibitor (light oil or silicone spray) for long-term storage
Maximum holding power for industrial subsea work
- Large-scale offshore construction and decommissioning operations
- Tasks requiring 400 kg pull force for the heaviest subsea tools and equipment
- Saturation diving operations where equipment staging is critical
- Companies that need maximum holding force from high-grade N42–N48 cores — grade for grade, an N48 core stores about 14% more magnetic energy than an N42 core of the same size
- Projects where magnet failure would create serious safety or operational risk
